For one night, identities disappear behind masks. The wealthy mingle with the poor, strangers become confidants, and everyone has something to hide.

Then a glass shatters.

The mysterious figure in red is found dead.

And someone at the masquerade is responsible.

Join us at Fae Fire for an immersive Murder Mystery Dinner featuring A Masquerade Murder by Masters of Mystery.

Each guest will step into character and become part of the story. You'll mingle, uncover secrets, examine clues, question suspects and decide who you believe committed the crime.

But be careful.

The person sitting across the table may know far more than they're admitting.

CHOOSE YOUR CHARACTER

Your ticket includes your own role in the mystery.

Browse the characters below, then choose the role you'd most enjoy bringing to life from the ticket options above. Each character is available to only ONE guest, so once a role is claimed, it's gone.

Not an actor? No problem. Some characters command the ballroom while others quietly observe from its edges. Choose a personality that sounds fun to you. No acting experience is needed.

Costumes are encouraged, but they don't need to be elaborate. We'll give you both “shop your closet” ideas and inspiration for taking your costume all the way to Venice, 1755.

DINNER IS SERVED

A murder mystery is hungry work.

Your ticket includes a buffet-style dinner served during the evening. We're keeping our first mystery dinner warm, comforting and uncomplicated so you can spend less time worrying about which fork to use and more time wondering whether the person beside you is a murderer.

Our planned menu will feature a chicken entrée, mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetable and salad.

Final menu will be announced prior to the event and may vary slightly.

If you have a food allergy or dietary restriction, please let us know when purchasing your ticket so we can determine whether an accommodation is available.

DRESS FOR THE MASQUERADE

Costumes are highly encouraged.

Think Venetian masquerade, mysterious aristocrat, gowns, suits, dramatic accessories and, of course, masks.

You don't need an elaborate costume to participate. A mask and a willingness to play along are enough to join the intrigue.

WHEN THE MASQUERADE BEGINS

Doors open at 6:00 PM. Arrive early, order a drink, settle in and get acquainted with the other suspicious characters joining you for the evening.

The murder mystery begins promptly at 6:30 PM, so please plan to arrive before the game begins.

The evening concludes at approximately 10:00 PM.

Each ticket option represents one character in the mystery. Read through the character descriptions below, find the personality that sounds most fun to you, then select that character when purchasing your ticket.

Male, female and gender-flexible roles are available. Character gender is noted in each description.

Don't worry about choosing the “right” character. There isn't one. Some roles are bold and theatrical, while others are quieter and observant. Choose the one you'll have the most fun playing.

Once a character is purchased, that role is claimed and will no longer be available for another guest.

THE FOX

Meet The Fox

The Fox is a self-made young man who wasn't born into wealth or high society. Raised in a farming family with little money, he worked his way up and built an impressive fortune of his own. Today he owns ships, shops and even a small estate.

There's just one problem: in 1755 Venice, earning your fortune doesn't necessarily earn you a place among those who inherited theirs.

The Fox is a male character.

From Fae Fire: Have fun with this! You don't have to be an actor. Give The Fox a little swagger, confidence and the attitude of someone who knows he earned his seat at the table.

Costume Inspiration: Keep it simple with black or dark dress pants, a white button-down shirt, vest or blazer, dress shoes and a masquerade mask. A pocket watch, scarf or inexpensive costume jewelry can add a little 1755 flair.

THE WOLF

Meet The Wolf

Handsome, charming and dangerously persuasive, The Wolf is a young soldier in the Italian army with very little fortune to his name. He's flirtatious, eloquent and knows exactly how to make himself appealing to the people around him.

Unfortunately, honesty isn't necessarily one of his strongest qualities. Money and power are powerful motivators for The Wolf, and a wealthy romance could solve quite a few problems.

From Fae Fire: This character was made for a little theatrical flirting and bravado. Channel the charming rogue in the room and don't be afraid to turn up the personality.

THE TURTLE

Meet The Turtle

Quiet, reserved and considerably more sensible than some members of the family, The Turtle would happily trade lavish parties and social drama for a peaceful life somewhere far away.

Unfortunately, The Turtle's family has other ideas. While everyone else celebrates, drinks and creates chaos, The Turtle is often the one trying to bring a little reason back into the room.

The Turtle is a gender-flexible character.

From Fae Fire: Quiet characters can be wonderfully suspicious. You don't need to be the loudest person at the table. Watch, listen and let everyone wonder what you're thinking.

Costume Inspiration: Raid your closet for neutral or darker dress clothes, a cardigan, vest, blouse, simple dress or button-down shirt. Add a modest masquerade mask and perhaps an old book or handkerchief as a prop.

THE HARE

Meet The Hare

The Hare comes from a respectable family with money, connections and a reputation to maintain. Friendly, talkative and fond of a good party, The Hare believes life should be enjoyed and that everyone deserves an opportunity to enjoy it.

Generosity and charitable causes are important to The Hare, although a long-running rivalry between prominent families means even good intentions can create enemies.

The Hare is a gender-flexible character.

From Fae Fire: This is your permission slip to be social. Work the room, make friends, share opinions and behave as though this masquerade might just be your party.

Costume Inspiration: A cocktail dress, dress pants with a blouse or button-down, a blazer, vest, pearls, costume jewelry or scarf can easily become your look once you add a masquerade mask.

THE SHARK

Meet The Shark

The youngest son of a powerful Venetian family, The Shark has grown up surrounded by status and expectations but isn't particularly interested in either.

Rather than chasing society or fortune, he'd prefer a quieter existence. He once imagined a life in the clergy, but his father had other plans and directed him toward law instead. Now he's expected to protect the family's reputation, including eventually making a respectable marriage.

From Fae Fire: Play with the tension here. Everyone expects something from you, and you're not entirely convinced you want any of it.

Costume Inspiration: Black dress pants, a crisp white shirt and dark jacket are plenty. Add a vest, tie or cravat-style scarf and a dark masquerade mask.

THE CAT

Meet The Cat

Recently widowed, The Cat has discovered that marriage and money can disappear with alarming speed. Her late husband's estate largely passed elsewhere, leaving her and her children with dramatically reduced circumstances.

She's temporarily relying on family for support, but The Cat has no intention of remaining dependent forever. Securing prosperous futures for her children has become a very high priority.

From Fae Fire: Think elegant, observant and determined. The Cat may be down on her luck, but she certainly doesn't have to look like it.

THE BLACK SWAN

Meet The Black Swan

The Black Swan is something of a mystery. They appeared in Venetian society seemingly out of nowhere, claiming respectable family origins but possessing neither title nor remaining fortune.

Charming, polished and socially graceful, The Black Swan has managed to cultivate an impeccable reputation and become a welcome guest among the aristocracy. But beneath all that refinement is ambition, and marrying into money would certainly make life easier.

THE DRAGON

Meet The Dragon

Wealthy, handsome and exceptionally eligible, The Dragon is one of Venice's most desirable bachelors and knows it.

With family connections, a substantial fortune and property of his own, he can afford to be selective. Very selective. Proud and judgmental, The Dragon isn't easily impressed and has little patience for anyone obviously pursuing him for his money.

THE MOUSE

Meet The Mouse

The Mouse has had a difficult start in life. After losing both parents and the family's fortune, this young relative was taken in by a powerful uncle and given a home and education.

That generosity comes with expectations. The Mouse lives under strict rules and is keenly aware that upsetting the wrong person could threaten the security they've finally found. As a result, The Mouse tends to be quiet, obedient and careful.

The Mouse is a gender-flexible character.

From Fae Fire: Don't mistake quiet for boring. Sometimes the person saying the least is the person everyone should be watching.

Costume Inspiration: Keep things deliberately modest: a simple dress, skirt and blouse, dress pants and button-down, cardigan or vest. Choose understated accessories and a simple mask.

THE STALLION

Meet The Stallion

Parties, drinking, gambling and romance are among his favorite pursuits, and his reputation around Venice reflects it. Charming, charismatic and accustomed to escaping consequences, The Stallion isn't exactly rushing toward a quiet married life.

THE UNICORN

Meet The Unicorn

The Unicorn is the eldest daughter of a widowed mother and, at 18, has recently stepped into society. Pretty, independent and decidedly free-spirited, she'd much rather spend her time with poetry, art, music and the outdoors than worrying about society's endless rules.

Her unconventional behavior doesn't always earn approval. The Unicorn isn't particularly interested in behaving exactly as a proper young lady is expected to behave, especially when those expectations begin to feel like a cage.

The Unicorn is a female character.

From Fae Fire: This is a wonderful character for someone who wants to bring a little rebellious energy to the masquerade. Be curious, spirited and completely unimpressed by anyone trying to tell you how a proper lady should behave.

Costume Inspiration: You may already have a flowing dress, floral dress, long skirt and blouse, shawl or romantic-looking top in your closet. Add flowers in your hair, delicate jewelry and a masquerade mask.

THE DOVE

Meet The Dove

The Dove is The Dragon's younger sister, just 18 years old and newly introduced to Venetian society. She possesses a considerable fortune of her own and has lived a relatively sheltered life, leaving her sweet, friendly and somewhat naïve about the ways of the world.

Naturally, eligible young men have noticed her. Unfortunately for them, her extremely protective older brother has noticed them too.

From Fae Fire: Sweet doesn't mean boring. Approach the masquerade with wide-eyed excitement and let everyone else wonder whether you're really as innocent as you seem.

Costume Inspiration: Look for a light-colored cocktail dress, flowing skirt and blouse, pearls, delicate jewelry or a pretty shawl. White, cream, blush or pale blue would work beautifully with a simple masquerade mask.

THE STAG

Meet The Stag

The Stag is a wealthy gentleman who owns a small estate in the Italian countryside. Although he wasn't born into the aristocracy, his military service brought him into the orbit of some of Venice's most powerful men.

Polite, well-liked and quietly handsome, The Stag has become increasingly reclusive with age. Now in his 40s, he seems largely uninterested in romance. Perhaps that's because his heart belonged to someone long ago, a woman he was forbidden to marry and was never able to find again.

The Stag is a male character.

From Fae Fire: Think quiet confidence rather than showmanship. You've lived a little, loved deeply and don't need to prove yourself to anyone in the room. A touch of mysterious melancholy wouldn't hurt.

Costume Inspiration: A suit, blazer, dark trousers, white button-down or vest will work perfectly. Add boots or dress shoes, a scarf tied loosely at the neck and a classic mask.

THE COUNTESS

Meet The Countess

The Countess is the woman behind the masquerade itself.

A wealthy widow whose late husband served as Governor of Venice for two decades, she sits at the very center of Venetian high society. Every year she hosts a masquerade for the city's elite, and her opinion can make a reputation almost as quickly as it can destroy one.

Fashion, food, parties, marriages, social standing. The Countess has an opinion on all of it, and challenging her authority is rarely wise.

The Countess is a female character.

From Fae Fire: If you choose The Countess, this is your ballroom. Enter accordingly. You don't need to shout for attention when everyone already knows you're the most important woman in the room.

Costume Inspiration: Start with the fanciest dress you own. Black, burgundy, navy, emerald or jewel tones would be fantastic. Add statement jewelry, pearls, gloves, a shawl and an ornate masquerade mask. An updo instantly adds another layer.

THE BLUEBIRD

Meet The Bluebird

The Bluebird is The General's middle child, raised with an acute awareness of family reputation and social standing.

Meet The Dog

People tend not to pay much attention to The Dog, which means conversations happen nearby that perhaps shouldn't. Over time, The Dog has collected quite an assortment of gossip and secrets.

There's also a deeply personal reason for attending these grand Venetian gatherings: The Dog hopes to learn more about an unknown father believed to be somewhere among Venice's society.

The Sparrow is a distant relation of The Countess, although the exact branches of that family tree are complicated enough that few people seem entirely sure how they're connected.

When her parents fell on difficult times, The Countess took her in. Now 28, The Sparrow serves largely as her companion, reading to her, running errands, accompanying her on visits and handling many of the tasks The Countess would rather delegate.

Quiet and unassuming, The Sparrow isn't accustomed to commanding much attention. Marriage prospects haven't exactly been lining up at the door either.

From Fae Fire: Don't underestimate being overlooked. While everyone is watching the grand personalities in the room, The Sparrow has an excellent opportunity to watch everyone else.

THE LION

Meet The Lion

The Lion is one of the most powerful men in Venice and a longtime ally of The Countess's late husband.

Now retired, he's devoted himself to preserving the traditional social order. The Lion believes strongly in rank, privilege and keeping Venice's social classes separate. In his view, masquerades should remain the playground of the wealthy and influential, not an opportunity for ordinary citizens to mingle with them.

Those convictions have earned him rivals, particularly among families with very different ideas about how society should operate.

Meet The Weasel

The Weasel presents himself as a man of faith, but humility isn't exactly his defining characteristic.

Proud, ambitious and deeply concerned with status, he seeks the approval of Venice's most powerful people while treating those below him rather differently. Comfortable living and social advancement are high on his list of priorities, and marrying a wealthy woman could provide a very convenient path upward.

The Weasel is a male character.

From Fae Fire: This character practically begs to be played with a little exaggerated self-importance. Be charming to the powerful, superior to everyone else and absolutely convinced that you're behaving perfectly reasonably.

Costume Inspiration: Black pants and a black button-down give you almost everything you need. A dark blazer or long coat works too. Add a simple white collar effect, dark vest and understated masquerade mask.

Meet The Phoenix

The Phoenix is a character whose presence at the masquerade comes with a history, relationships and secrets that will become increasingly important as the evening unfolds.
